Aloha, my name is Kiana Yanuaria. This is my sixth year teaching first grade and my first year at Manoa El. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and a Master of Education degree in elementary education.
This summer was full of new beginnings. I got married, honeymooned in Bali, and settled in to my new classroom in Manoa. Each summer, I read a number of teaching books to refine and deepen my teaching practice. I’m so excited to implement my new learning around matching instruction to students’ developmental strengths and needs. I believe social-emotional learning and academic learning are equally important in a child’s development. My hope is to build a safe, joyful, and challenging learning environment that supports all children to grow.
Children learn reading, writing, and math within a workshop model. Workshop is a teaching method that honors each child's developmental needs. It allows the teacher to differentiate instruction by meeting with students in small groups and individual conferences. This classroom environment encourages individual responsibility, student choice, and social learning.
